Fighter's Biography

  • What do you do for fight preparation?

I split my time between master trainers Shuailiu Meng (San Shou), Nick Durandt (Boxing), Rodney King (BJJ), Rodney Anthony and Steve Franck (Strength and power) and Troy Mayers (conditioning). Carol Anthony assists with my diet. I typically train 4 – 5 hours a day. There’s no difference between regular training and fight preparation. The best never rest, and consistency is key.

When and why did you start martial arts training?

I’ve always been involved in martial arts, for as long as I can remember. I began training in “mma” style martial arts after being armbarred. Now I pursue martial arts because it’s my way of testing my mind and pushing my body, and my way of expressing myself. For me facing a difficult partner who forces me to adapt in order to succeed is the most satisfying way to spend my time.

How did you transition to MMA?

I began in traditional martial arts, judo when I was very young and later kung fu. I transitioned to MMA because those arts were obviously not as combat applicable as an MMA style.

  • What ranks and titles have you held?

I dominated grappling competitions in the early 2000’s. I was XFC Africa lightweight champion. I have held other titles over the years, but none come to mind right now.

Tell us about your most memorable fight.

Some of my best memories are in the gym. Touching “the zone” or “peak performance” or “coming close to G-d” or whatever name you want to give it is what this is really about for me, so it doesn’t matter whether it’s in training or in a competitive environment.
