Fighter's Biography

  • Background disciplines?

    Muay Thai

    Fight preparation?

I train at Team CIT MMA with a great bunch of guys 4-5 days a week, and do my own running and cardio every day that I'm not at the gym. We normally just have a rest day on Sundays! I believe we have the best trainers in the country right now and I’m thankful I'm at a gym like CIT where our trainers look out for our best interests.

When & why did you start martial arts training?

I used to train in Muay Thai and once MMA exploded I had a burning desire to compete because of the various different martial arts you needed to be good at. Muay Thai gave me a great striking base but nothing compares to the training and competition of MMA

  • What ranks and titles have you held?

Represented SA at the WMF amateur Muaythai tournament in Bangkok in 2010. I placed a tied 3rd and it was a big eye-opener.

What do you enjoy about MMA?

The thing I love the most is the amount of dedication needed to be a good competitor. MMA is a lifestyle, it’s not something you can just practice 3 times a week for 1hour and go jump in the cage – you will get hurt. Total dedication is needed in all aspects of one’s life and many sacrifices need to be made for training and to live a healthy, clean lifestyle. I consider this a small price to pay for the sport I love and would not have it any other way.

What ranks & titles have you held?

    Protea Colors in Muay Thai

    EFC Welterweight Champion

    Favoured technique?

I like all aspects of MMA but I do like my striking as well as the ground and pound.

Tell us about your most memorable fight?

Great amateur fights! I started off at light heavy but dropped to middle for my fourth fight, and the first four I finished in round one with my striking. My fifth fight, at AFL against Brandon Botes, was pretty memorable because it was the first time I had been taken into the 2nd round and I had never fought a guy that had such a hard chin and heart. I eventually finished the fight in the 2nd with a big knee to the sternum. My next fight was the toughest to date, against Bradley Booysens from Men of War. We fought the main fight of the evening at All Stars and guess we had to put on a show, which we did! We had a 3-round back and forth war; Bradley cracked my nose in the 2nd causing a lot of blood through the rest of the fight, and I landed up winning a split decision but was upset with my performance. I did however learn a lot from that fight. I fought at NFN 3 in Nelspruit against Renier Vos and knocked him out with a big left hook in under a minute. I even received KO of the Night for it! My last fight was a pro fight against Sydney Mokgolo, who is quite a big name in the industry. We went three rounds and I controlled him on the ground and landed tons of ground. And of course the biggest achievement in my career, knocking out Adam Speechly and winning the welterweight title has to be the most definitive moment in my fighting career!

What other interesting information can you tell us about yourself?

I run my own successful plumbing construction business with my brothers Gareth and Matthew.

What does it mean to you to fight in EFC?

It means a lot to be able to fight in the top promotion in the country. It has been a dream ever since I went to watch the first EFC event with my brothers.

What do you consider your strengths to be?

I thought it was striking but in my last fight I dominated on the ground. In general I’d say I have good hands and quick stand-up.

What do you do when not competing or training?

Like my brother Gareth, I’m a full time plumber. It’s not easy to fit in the amount of training needed to be a pro MMA athlete, so when I’m not working or training I’m just cooking and resting.
