Johannesburg, South Africa – The official weigh-in for EFC 46, the final event of 2015, took place in front of a fully packed Mardi Gras Theatre at Carnival City on Friday afternoon.
Headlined by the welterweight title fight between champion David Buirski and the number one contender Martin 'The Punisher' van Staden, tensions came to boiling point on stage after over six months of media speculation and contempt between the two athletes.
What started with smiles, the face off escalated rapidly into physical confrontation. Van Staden, the protagonist, grabbed the back of Buirski’s head and Buirski immediately reacted and shoved the challenger backwards.
It is clear both men want to finish their opponent, as they stated in their post-interviews. "Little man, I'm going to make you look like a fool." Said Buirski. Van Staden was confident in stating he would produce yet another knockout, "You are going to sleep tomorrow my boy!"
Only one question remains. Will the dreaded welterweight curse endure, or will Buirski be the first man in history to break it?
In a complete contrast of moods, fans cheered the return of MMA legend Chris Bright as he took to the scale for the first time in almost five years. Quickly followed by the jovial two time champion Adam 'The Prodigy' Speechly. There was nothing but respect between the two as Bright offered Speechly a bottle of water before facing-off.
Answering a late call-up, DRC's Bruno 'The Major' Mukulu took to the stage showing his brilliant physique and proudly displaying his country's flag. His opponent, Dricus 'Stillknocks' du Plessis was confident and unfazed by a late change of opponent.
Also featuring on the main card, seasoned Durban campaigner Abdul 'Hollywood' Hassan looked in prime condition to give the bigger Oumpie 'Lion Heart' Sebeko another 'Fight of the Night' challenge, of which both men are well known for.
Opening the main card are two fan favourites in a rematch from their days as amateurs. Both formidable warriors, Gordon 'Rage' Roodman is in the hunt for redemption for the loss he suffered that night against Keron 'Skinner' Davies two years ago. The athletes refused to unlock their gaze when facing off, eventually being forcibly separated by security.
Two athletes initially failed to make weight. Jasen van der Merwe opted to receive a financial penalty while Sebeko made weight within the allotted extra two hours.
